St Gregorys Youth and Community Initiative (SGY&CI) was first established in another Archdiocese in 1994 to serve the needs of the Liverpool community. It offered a relaxed, welcoming, and safe environment where young people could interact socially while honing their abilities and learning. SGY&CI obtained limited company status in November 2005, after which it adopted its memorandum and articles of association. The club changed its name to Netherley Youth & Community Initiative (NYCI) in September 2011 after the Archdiocese gave instructions. However, the club's goals and objectives remained the same: to enable residents of Netherley and the surrounding areas, regardless of age or social exclusion, to take part in activities organised by Netherley Youth & Community Initiative. The goals and objectives are to offer social welfare activities, educational opportunities, and entertainment options in the neighbourhood with the intention of raising living standards. The St. Gregorys Church Hall, which is close to the St. Gregorys Primary School, serves as the headquarters for the Netherley Youth & Community Initiative. The Liverpool City Council's Belle Vale Ward includes Netherley. Belle Vale continues to exhibit significant levels of general deprivation, ranking among the nation's top 10% most impoverished neighbourhoods, according to Liverpool City Council. The unemployment rate is 18.6%, which is higher than both the national average of 9.2% and the average in Liverpool of 15.3%.
