We are a self-sufficient business that offers a variety of services to the neighbourhood.
We collaborate with partners to offer facilities for community support, education, leisure, and recreation.
We have a cafe and other amenities and are housed in the wonderful old Central Schools building across from the Brownhills Miner statue.
G H Cox, an architect, built it in 1893 for the Norton-under-Cannock School Board.
Up until 1932, when the girls were transferred to larger facilities on Great Charles Street, it was a mixed school. From 1972 on, the building served as a comprehensive school.
It's important to note that Brownhills' first day school opened in what would later become the Sunday schoolroom in 1868, next to the Congregational Church in Coppice Side. To accommodate growing enrollment and a larger age range, a new school building, now known as the Activity Centre, was built.
The Central School was once referred to as the Activity Center and the Annex. The Activity Centre building was converted into a senior boys school with a significant addition (date unknown), and in November 1955, a new building was added to connect the old school and the extension on the Pelsall Road side, adding extra rooms to accommodate an additional 60 students. This is how it currently looks.
In the 1980s, the council put the property on the market with a 600,000 asking price with the idea of clearing the side and erecting three-story apartments, the Brownhills Local Committee was informed.
The Committee opposed right away citing regional historic and heritage concerns, and council officers recommended us to write to the council outlining our case for keeping the structure and explicitly asking that it be designated as a locally listed building.
Thank goodness the council heard us, and in due course When local listed status was given, previously unavailable funding sources became available, allowing for the completion of urgently required renovation work.
Richard Gildart purchased Oglay Hay's property and used it as a rabbit warren (hence The Warreners Arms).
By combining Ogley Hay, Shire Oak, Walsall Wood, and Norton Canes, the Brownhills Urban District was created.
There are more over a thousand council homes and apartments in the Brownhills Urban District.
Aldridge and Brownhills Urban District was created when Brownhills and Aldridge merged.
