In Britain, there are numerous Business Improvement Districts (BID). A BID is when a group of businesses agree to a tiny (often under 3 percent) additional fee connected to their property's rateable value. They then use this money to enhance the business and retail environment with the goal of ultimately increasing their sales.
The Kings Heath BID's geographic region includes the shops on Kings Heath High Street and the side streets leading off of it.
A BID must conduct a renewal vote of its businesses every five years to determine whether they consent to the BID continuing for a further five years. April 2008 through April 2013 marked the start of Kings Heath BID's first five years. The current term will last through March 2023, while the second term spanned from April 2013 to April 2018.
The roughly 300 local companies and organisations that make up the Kings Heath BID within the specified geographic region have all agreed to pay a BID charge that is equal to 1.75 percent of their rateable value. The money raised by this levy—roughly $140,000 annually—is reinvested in enhancing Kings Heath Center.
A Board of Directors, who are all business owners or managers in Kings Heath, develops the strategy for the Kings Heath BID. The Town Center Manager carries out their initiatives.
