From the Exmoor Stepping Stones CIC
In 1954, Exmoor was made a national park.
Since that time, local government and, starting in 1997, a free standing Exmoor National Park Authority, have coordinated the work to realise the goals of the National Park in the area.
The Exmoor National Park Authority chooses what steps to take to fulfil the two park objectives.
All planning applications within the National Park area are determined by the National Park Authority and applications are dealt with at our offices in Dulverton.
After being chosen by Parish Councils in the National Park, the Secretary of State appoints five Parish members.
Parish members are appointed to ensure that local people are involved in the running of the National Park; they are representatives of the local people in the National Park as a whole not just their own parish.
The Secretary of State for the Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs appoints five members, who are chosen for their expertise in the unique characteristics of the National Park and their capacity to reflect a broad national viewpoint.
These Secretary of State appointed members are typically appointed for a term of four years, although they are eligible for reappointment for a total of typically up to eight years.
When members of the Secretary of State are proposed for appointment, information will be posted on the website.
According to national regulations, Members must also register their disclosable pecuniary interests, or their business interests, such as their employment, trade, or profession, contracts they have with the Authority or with any companies they are affiliated with, as well as any other potential financial interests they may have (for example investments and assets including land and property within the National Park).
There is no requirement to distinguish between pecuniary interests that relate to the Member personally and those that relate to their spouse or civil partner when determining whether a member has a disclosable pecuniary interest. Members have a disclosable pecuniary interest if they or their spouse or civil partner have a pecuniary interest as described above.
The public can be confident that Members are prioritising the public interest and not their own financial affairs or those of their spouse or civil partner thanks to the declaration of pecuniary interests.
Here is a list of the members' interests.
At the Authority's offices in Exmoor House, Dulverton, Somerset, you can view the entire Register of Members' Interests.
