From the Claregate Activity Time
Michael Gove reiterated in June 2014 that all schools need to actively promote British values. After the Trojan Horse investigations in Birmingham sparked the allegation of a hard line Islamist takeover of the city's schools, the then-education secretary made the promise. The British values advocated by Michael Gove and David Cameron, issues and objections to this proposal, what we already do at Claregate Primary School, and fresh suggestions for further the promotion of British Values in our school are all covered in the justification that follows. British Values were defined by the government in the 2011 Prevent Strategy. These are the principles of democracy, the rule of law, personal freedom, respect for one another, and tolerance of individuals who hold diverse religious and philosophical ideas. Encourage students to accept responsibility for their behaviour, show initiative, and understand how they can contribute positively to the lives of those living and working in the area of the school and to society at large. Empower students to distinguish right from wrong and to respect the civil and criminal law of England. Help students gain a broad general knowledge of and respect for public institutions and services in England. Promote tolerance.
