In the late 1970s, as demonstrated by a number of black teachers and academics of the time, it was frustrating to see students, primarily from BAME backgrounds, being neglected or sidelined in mainstream education in their pursuit of academic success within the school state system. This led to the creation of the Croydon Supplementary Education Project (CSEP).
Black parents felt that their children were not being given the same opportunities as their white counterparts during this time because black students were thought to be more difficult to teach.
