Our History
Burnley is a market town in Lancashire, England, with a population of around 89,542. It is 21 miles north of Manchester and 25 miles east of Preston, at the confluence of the River Calder and River Brun.
The town began to develop in the early medieval period as a number of farming hamlets surrounded by manor houses and royal forests, and has held a market for more than 700 years. During the Industrial Revolution it became one of Lancashire's most prominent mill towns; at its peak it was one of the world's largest producers of cotton cloth, and a major centre of engineering. Burnley now has a post-industrial economy and landscape, and is increasingly a dormitory town for Manchester, Leeds and the M65 corridor.
The birth of Basnett Street Nursery School, was orginally known as 'Eastern Avenue Nursery School' back in 1952. Education and Finance Committee minutes from Burnley Borough Council provided valuable information on the plans, developments and the building of Eastern Avenue Nursery School which was already in progress during the middle of 1951.
As satisfactory progress was being maintained with the erection of Eastern Avenue Nursery School, five applications were submitted on 20th June 1951 for the vacant position of Nursery School Superintendent. The all lady applicants came from Burnley, Nelson and Lancaster however three were successful in obtaining interviews on 2nd July 1951. By September 1951, the appointment of Nursery School Superintendent was awarded to Mrs N Richmond from Nelson.
