From the Al Hikmah Nursery
The Al Hikmah Project got its start in 1988 with a local group of people who wished to build a masjid to offer a thorough understanding of Islam based on the Quran and Sunnah.
There was nowhere for the women in this region to go to learn about Islam.
The Masjid was established in 1991, and within a few years we expanded the Masjid to give our Muslim women a totally segregated location where they could pray and receive education.
In the North of England, we were among the first to offer this service.
From 1995 to 2008, the Al Hikmah Project sought to widen its scope by taking on the significant responsibility of providing Dawah outside the masjid.
This took the shape of an annual Islamic Awareness Week.
The lack of adequate room in the masjid to conduct our operations limited the scope of this undertaking.
We were able to launch a campaign in December 2008 to raise $306,000 for the purchase of an abandoned school, which would serve as the foundation for us to expand our operations and construct Keighley's first Islamic nursery and a youth centre.
The project's second phase involved opening Keighley's First Islamic Nursery in 2012 and creating a separate youth centre for males and females between the ages of 5 and 18.
By 2022, we hope to advance the Al Hikmah Project by building a nursery, expanding the masjid and the services it offers, and establishing a community engagement centre in Keighley. These developments will give us the chance to establish our sustainable income-generating ventures at this location and ensure that the organisation is not dependent on donations. The community engagement centre will be accessible to everyone in the neighbourhood to build a larger, better facility for everyone.
